This is my 1973 Daimler series 1 (XJ shape) 4.2 litre automatic ‘Sovereign’ in gunmetal grey metallic paintwork and cream leather interior. This model is extremely rare and there are few left remaining on the roads now. The bodywork and interior has patina (paintwork has some cracking). The underside, bodywork and wheel arches are all absolutely solid. There are a couple of small rust spots but no significant rust. The left side fuel tank is good, but the 2nd fuel tank on the right needs replacing. The chrome work - including the large distinctive front grille - is generally looking good, some of it could do with a polish.
The original 4.2 engine has covered just 63,000 miles and is powerful and pulls well through the gears. Some recent work has been done on servicing the engine and rebuilding the automatic choke. Sometimes the exhaust makes a backfiring noise (which I quite like). The car has power assisted steering. The brakes are working well. An original large service manual comes with the car.
The seat covers have been reupholstered in leather. However the seats would look better with some original spec seat covers over the top. The rest of the interior is original and is showing its age. The interior heater and fan works, and the electric windows are all working. The tires are all good and have a decent amount of tread.
Although the Daimler is certainly not a show-winner, she is a practical classic that can be used regularly and can be improved as time goes on. She is a joy to drive and attracts attention wherever she goes.
